Some homes cannot upsize their electrical service capacity without expensive underground works to replace the Utility service cable buried below ground to their meter. In these circumstances, an additional electrical appliance such as an EV charger, Air Conditioning Unit, or Heat Pump, may still be added with the use of a Load Manager. This device is connected to the Service Compartment of the electrical panel, and monitors the actual current being drawn by the home.
The device is enclosed in a separate enclosure from the panel, and this easily allows circuit wiring to pass through it from the panel, and out to the device. When the Load Manager detects high current present on the main service breaker, it opens a relay that prevents the connected appliance from operating, thus preventing nuisance tripping of the main breaker. This function is automatic and does not require any user action. If the service load reduces when other appliances are not in use, then normal appliance operation resumes.
