Ultimate Electric Ltd. Offers Electric Panel Upgrades in Calgary and Surrounding Areas

Most of us don’t give much thought to the electrical system in our homes until something goes wrong. If you’re experiencing problems with your electrical system, or if it’s just outdated, you may need an electrical panel upgrade. If so, here are some things you need to know about panel upgrades, and why and when you may need one.

Your electrical panel is the central point of your home’s electrical system. It’s where all the wiring in your home connects via circuit breakers, to the main power supply. Like all other components in your home, over time, your panel & circuit breakers’ condition will deteriorate or can even become overloaded if new equipment is added without proper consideration to the total electrical load on it.

If your home is still supplied by a 60 amp Service from Enmax, or Fortis, it is a certainty that your panel needs to be upgraded to a minimum of 100 amps. Modern homes with multiple 240 volt appliances such as electric range, dryer, electric heating, air conditioning units, hot tubs, or E.V. charging systems can not reliably function on less than 100 amp.

In larger homes, or for homeowners who want to add hot tubs, air conditioning etc. it may be necessary to either upgrade to a 200 amp panel or where that’s not practical, install a load management system on a 100 amp panel. Load management is a way to monitor the load on your main 100 amp breaker, and run a load such as air conditioning when the system is in a safe enough condition to handle it. It will turn a load on and off automatically without the need for the homeowner to control it, or even have to think about it!

Ultimate Electric Ltd will help & advise you on your electrical system and what is needed to help you make an informed decision. We also handle all the permits, inspections, and bookings for the Utility companies involved, included in your quote. There are no hidden charges.

Electrical Codes

Modern Canadian Electrical Code requirements also demand that installation of new circuits meet today’s needs. So if you’re planning a renovation to your home that involves demolition and reconstruction of a kitchen, you will likely need more spare spaces on your electrical panel than you needed before. Individual appliances such as a dishwasher, refrigerator, and even kitchen counter plugs have stricter rules to meet building code than they did in the past. The same goes for basement development, or secondary suite development. When the square footage being used in the home is changing then it follows that the electrical needs are likely to change as well.

For Older Homes

If your home is more than 30 years old, it’s likely that the electrical panel is outdated and possibly needs to be replaced. Certainly, the circuit breakers may need to be functionally checked to ensure they operate when they are required to. An electrical panel upgrade can improve the safety of your home by installing modern Arc Fault and/or Ground Fault Circuit interrupter circuit breakers where necessary to help prevent fires and electrical shocks.

Satisfaction Guaranteed

All of the points above should give a homeowner an insight into why they may require a panel upgrade if they are considering adding an appliance, renovating a kitchen, developing a suite, or even building a garage.

Our advice is to always consult a licensed Master Electrician who has the qualifications, skill and experience to calculate the total load correctly, and can help with your development, provide a permit, and carry out the work professionally.
